Brain Awareness Week 2018

March 10-16

Dr. Pierre Marquet

Canada Excellence Research Chair in Neurophotonics
Professor, Département de psychiatrie et de neurosciences, Université Laval

Visit by Dr. Marquet

To mark Brain Awareness Week 2018, the MNN will be hosting Canada Excellence Research Chair in Neurophotonics, Dr. Pierre Marquet, from Université Laval. Dr. Marquet is world leader in the fields of psychiatry and neurophotonics, and his work combines clinical studies with innovative imaging technologies to identify biomarkers for autism, depression, and bipolar disorder. Additional information about his research and publications can be found on his CERVO Brain Research Centre profile.

Mar. 10: 4th Annual Winnipeg Brain Bee

In addition to the visit and lectures by Dr. Marquet, and the Café Scientifique session, on Saturday, March 10th, 2018, we'll begin our BAW activities with our fourth Winnipeg Brain Bee with Manitoba high school students competing. It will run from 9am to 4pm in Theatre E, Bannatyne Campus. We are excited to grow this event over the next several years as a tool for grass-roots neuroscience outreach in our local communities.

The Brain Bee is a competition for Grades 9-12 in which students are tested on their knowledge about the brain and neuroscience research. This event is designed to stimulate interest and excitement about brain research, including memory, sleep, intelligence, emotion, perception, stress, aging, brain imaging, neurology, neurotransmitters, genetics, and brain disease.

This event includes talks and demonstrations and is a challenge to organize and execute. Help from the Manitoba neuroscience community is greatly appreciated. Faculty, staff and trainees can all play a role. Please let Dr. Sari Hannila know if you're willing to help out.

Mar. 12: Café Scientifique

On Monday, March 12th, 2018, 7pm, the Manitoba Neuroscience Network will be co-sponsoring a session in the Café Scientifique series with the Office of the VP Research. The session is entitled, "Analyzing The Spectrum: The Neuroscience of Autism".

Mar. 14: Dr. Pierre Marquet, Scientific Lecture

Dr. Marquet will be giving a scientific talk on Wednesday, March 14th at noon in Theatre C, BMSB, Bannatyne Campus. The talk will be on the subject "Neurophotonics to Intercept the Emergence of Major Psychiatric Disorders." He is also available for one-on-one meetings during the day, including a lunch meeting with trainees. To request a meeting, please email Kae Normandeau.

Mar. 14: In Conversation with Dr. Pierre Marquet

Dr. Marquet will be giving a talk, open to the general public, at McNally Robinson Bookstore, 1120 Grant Ave., at 7pm, on the topic "Identification of a childhood risk syndrome of major psychiatric disases: a step towards their prevention."

Mar. 15: Dr. Karim Fouad, Scientific Lecture

Dr. Karim Fouad, Canada Research Chair in Spinal Cord Injury, will be giving a scientific talk on Thursday, March 15th at noon in 626 BMSB, Bannatyne Campus. The talk will be on the topic "Promoting plasticity and recovery following spinal cord injury."

Mar. 15 & 16: School Tours of Neurocraft

Complementing our week of BAW 2018 activities will be the month-long art exhibition of works by several local Neurocraft artists, on display at the C2 Centre for Craft, 1-329 Cumberland Ave., Winnipeg. This exhibition of works inspired by the brain kicks off March 2nd, with an Opening Reception at C2 from 5-9pm, and is open for viewing Wed.-Sat., 12-4pm, until March 31.

School tours of Neurocraft will take place from 1-3pm, Mar. 15 & 16.
